You have heard of the Mayr cure but do not know what a day actually looks like? Here we go through a typical cure day from morning to evening and show how a week feels. Every house does it a little differently, but the basic pattern is similar everywhere.
- The day has a fixed rhythm: small meals, doctor's visits, treatments and plenty of rest.
- The main meal is at lunchtime; in the evening you eat lightly or not at all.
- The first days are often hard; from the middle of the week many feel lighter.
The morning
In many houses the day starts with a glass of water, often with a little Epsom salt to stimulate digestion. Then there is tea. Breakfast is the well-known cure roll or a piece of stale bread that you chew very slowly, sometimes with a little milk or an alkaline soup.
Chewing slowly is not a ritual for its own sake. It is meant to help you eat more mindfully and notice sooner when you are full.
Morning and lunchtime
The doctor's visit and treatments are usually scheduled for the morning. The doctor examines your abdomen, asks how you are and adjusts your cure level. Depending on the house, there are abdominal treatments, massages, exercise or physiotherapy.
Lunch is the main meal of the day: light, steamed vegetables, a small portion of protein or a soup, matched to your cure level. Here too: eat slowly, chew well and do not drink with meals.
- Doctor's consultation and abdominal examination
- Treatments such as abdominal treatment, massage or wraps
- Exercise in the fresh air
- Lunch as the most important meal
A Mayr day is calm, slow and surprisingly full of small things.
Afternoon and evening
After lunch it is time to rest, often with a warm liver compress. Then you go for a walk, read, visit the spa or sleep. In the evening many houses serve only tea or a light soup, because digestion should be at rest in the evening.
Many guests go to bed early. Without heavy food and alcohol, many sleep better after a few days.
How the week feels
The first two to three days are often the hardest. Some get headaches or feel tired or grumpy, especially if they normally drink a lot of coffee. From the middle of the week many report more energy and a lighter feeling.
In the last days the food becomes a little richer, and you discuss with the doctor how to continue at home. That is why most houses recommend at least seven nights.
Frequently asked questions
Will I be hungry on a Mayr cure?
Sometimes at the beginning. Many are surprised how quickly small portions fill you up when you chew slowly. The doctor adapts the cure level to you.
Can I drink coffee?
Usually not. It is best to cut down a few days before you arrive; that makes the first days easier.
How much free time will I have?
More than many expect. Besides the doctor, treatments and meals there is plenty of time for rest, walks and the spa.
Luxly does not provide medical advice. Whether a programme suits you is something to discuss with the house's medical team or your own doctor.
