The Mayr cure comes from Austria, and that is still where most of the well-known Mayr houses are. In Switzerland, too, you find houses with a long Mayr tradition. Here you find out which regions are known for it, how the houses differ and which we recommend.
- Austria is the home of the Mayr cure, with well-known houses in Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria.
- In Switzerland, some houses combine Mayr with a classic health centre.
- More important than the country are medical leadership, cure cuisine and atmosphere.
Why Austria
The physician Franz Xaver Mayr (1875–1965) was Austrian. His cure developed above all in Austria, where many doctors were trained in it. Well-known Mayr regions are Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia, the Ausseerland in Styria and Tyrol around Innsbruck.
The houses range from small, family-run cure hotels to large medical resorts with their own diagnostics.
Mayr in Switzerland
Switzerland also has houses offering F.X. Mayr, often as part of a larger health centre with physiotherapy and check-ups. Typically Swiss: thorough, calm and with plenty of nature on the doorstep. Prices are usually higher than in Austria.
Mountains, lakes and calm: in the Alps a Mayr cure feels almost like a holiday.
How the houses differ
Not every Mayr cure is the same. These points make the difference.
- Classic Mayr cure or Modern Mayr Medicine with more diagnostics
- Strict cure levels or a flexible, wholesome Mayr cuisine
- Small cure house or large resort with spa
- Setting: lake, mountains or close to a city
- Options for companions who are not on the cure
What it costs
A Mayr week with room, cure programme and doctor usually costs a few thousand euros per person. In Switzerland and in very well-known houses the price is often higher. You find current room prices in the portraits; the cure programme usually comes on top.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Mayr cure cheaper in Austria than in Switzerland?
Usually yes, because rooms and treatments cost more in Switzerland. But it depends a lot on the house.
How do I get there?
Innsbruck has an international airport and good rail links; Appenzell is easy to reach by train from Zurich. Many houses offer pick-up from the station.
What is Modern Mayr Medicine?
A further development of the classic cure with more diagnostics and more wholesome food rather than pure fasting.
Luxly does not provide medical advice. Whether a programme suits you is something to discuss with the house's medical team or your own doctor.
