A thorough check-up at a hotel sounds tempting: all examinations within a few days, with spa and good food in between. But what does it cost, and what is included? Here we show you what to expect, what insurance covers and how to recognise a fair offer.
- A comprehensive check-up with an overnight stay usually costs a few thousand euros, depending on scope.
- The price covers examinations and hotel; imaging such as MRI often costs extra.
- In Germany, statutory insurance covers a basic check-up with your GP free of charge.
What to expect
A comprehensive check-up at a hotel with an overnight stay usually costs a few thousand euros, depending on its scope. At Park Igls, for example, the Super Medical Check starts at around €3,900. For Lanserhof Tegernsee, the specialist travel agency Healing Holidays quotes around £4,400 for four nights with a basic medical programme.
More compact programmes over one or two days cost less. Some houses charge examinations and room separately, others offer packages.
What the price includes
Typically included:
- A detailed medical consultation and physical examination
- Extensive blood tests
- Heart and circulation, often with a stress ECG
- Ultrasound of abdomen and vessels, lung function
- A final consultation and written report
A good check-up does not measure everything, but what matters for you.
What often costs extra
Imaging such as MRI or CT, special lab values, skin cancer screening, sleep measurements or consultations with further specialists are often charged separately. Ask exactly what the package includes before you book.
What insurance pays
In Germany, people with statutory insurance are entitled to a free health check-up with their GP every three years from 35, and once between 18 and 34. From 35, skin cancer screening every two years is added. A comprehensive check-up at a hotel goes far beyond that and is a private service.
With private insurance, it depends on the policy. Some cover preventive medical services at a hotel too. Ask your insurer beforehand.
How to recognise a fair offer
A fair offer lists all examinations and the total price in advance. It explains who interprets the results and gives you a written report you can pass on to your own doctor. Be careful with packages that mainly sell expensive add-on products.
Frequently asked questions
Is a check-up at a hotel worth it?
If you have little time, want everything bundled and like being examined in calm surroundings, yes. It does not replace your own doctor: take the results home.
How long does a check-up take?
A compact check-up is often done in one or two days; extensive programmes need three to four nights.
Can I deduct the check-up from my taxes?
Prevention at your own request is usually not deductible. For your individual case, ask a tax adviser.
Luxly does not provide medical advice. Whether a programme suits you is something to discuss with the house's medical team or your own doctor.
